Suzhou Day Trip from Shanghai: The Perfect 1-Day Itinerary (2026)

Suzhou is about 30 minutes from Shanghai by high-speed rail, which makes it the best single-day trip from Shanghai for first-time travelers. If Yu Garden in Shanghai felt small and rushed, Suzhou is the place where classical Jiangnan gardens actually deliver — larger, older, and properly representative of the form.

This guide shows how to fit the essential Suzhou experience into one day and be back in Shanghai by dinner.

Not staying overnight? Focus on Humble Administrator's Garden, Suzhou Museum, and Pingjiang Road. That's the day.

The plan at a glance

  • 7:30 AM — leave Shanghai hotel
  • 8:30 AM — arrive Suzhou
  • 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM — Humble Administrator's Garden
  • 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM — Suzhou Museum
  • 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM — lunch near Pingjiang Road
  • 1:30 PM – 3:30 PM — walk Pingjiang Road
  • 3:30 PM – 5:00 PM — Lingering Garden OR Tiger Hill
  • 5:00 PM — back to Suzhou Station
  • 6:00 PM — arrive Shanghai, dinner in the city

Getting there

High-speed rail from Shanghai

Trains to Suzhou run frequently throughout the day — typically every 15–30 minutes during normal hours. G-series trains take 25–30 minutes. Book on Trip.com or the 12306 app the night before or the morning of; check the app for current prices.

Which Shanghai station?

When you search "Shanghai → Suzhou" in the app, you'll see departures from multiple Shanghai stations — Shanghai Hongqiao has the most frequent G-trains and is usually the easiest departure point, but other stations may also work depending on your hotel. Pick whichever station is easier for you to reach.

Which Suzhou station?

Same principle applies in reverse — Suzhou has several stations, and different trains arrive at different ones. The most convenient for the old town (and for this itinerary) is Suzhou Station (苏州站). Others, like Suzhou North and Suzhou Industrial Park Station, are further from the gardens. When booking, pay attention to which Suzhou station your train arrives at so you can plan onward transport accordingly.

Morning: Humble Administrator's Garden (拙政园)

Getting there

  • Taxi / DiDi from Suzhou Station (~15 minutes)
  • Or take Metro Line 4 to Beiyuan Road (北园路) station — yes, Suzhou has a metro, multiple lines, and it's a practical option if you don't have heavy luggage.

Practical details

  • Opening hours: 07:30–17:00
  • Ticket: ¥80
  • Book online the night before in peak season — tickets cap daily.
  • Arrive at opening (around 7:30) for the thinnest crowds; by mid-morning it gets busier.

What to expect

  • Suzhou's largest classical garden (~5 hectares)
  • UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Plan 1.5–2 hours of slow walking
  • The garden has three main areas — you don't need a fixed route; wander and linger where the light or the view catches you.

Late morning: Suzhou Museum

  • 5-minute walk from Humble Administrator's Garden — they're next to each other.
  • Free entry, but advance booking is required — the museum uses a WeChat mini-program for reservations; book at least a day ahead in peak season.
  • Designed by I.M. Pei (the architect of the Louvre Pyramid) — a modern reinterpretation of Suzhou garden architecture, worth seeing even if you're not a museum person.
  • Collections include Jiangnan jade, ancient bronzes, and Ming-era paintings.
  • Plan 1–1.5 hours.

Lunch: Pingjiang Road area

Getting there

  • 10-minute walk south from Suzhou Museum; cross Dongbei Street and enter the canal district.

Where to eat

  • Songhelou (松鹤楼) — Suzhou's best-known traditional restaurant, famous for squirrel-shaped mandarin fish (松鼠鳜鱼). Reservations recommended for dinner, though lunch is usually walk-in friendly.
  • Pingjiang Road street food — crab-flavored buns, sweet rice cakes (糕), candied hawthorn (糖葫芦). Good for grazing rather than a sit-down meal.

For more current restaurant picks inside the Pingjiang district, check Dianping once you're on the ground — the area has a steady churn of new places opening.

Afternoon: Pingjiang Road (平江路)

Walk the canal

  • ~1.5 km of preserved canal-side street — tea houses, boutique shops, Kunqu opera houses, and small bridges across the water.
  • Cross any of the small bridges for photos; each side has its own atmosphere.
  • This is the most "Suzhou" part of the day — if you only do one non-garden thing in Suzhou, do this.

Plan 2 hours of unhurried wandering.

Late afternoon: one more garden or Tiger Hill

Pick one. Don't try to do both — you'll be tired and the logistics won't work.

Option A: Lingering Garden (留园)

  • Opening hours: 07:30–17:00
  • Ticket: ¥55
  • ~20-minute DiDi across town
  • Smaller than Humble Administrator's, but widely regarded as one of the best-designed classical gardens in China — more intimate, with famous use of rock and water features.
  • Plan 1.5 hours.

Option B: Tiger Hill (虎丘)

  • Opening hours: 07:30–17:00
  • Ticket: ¥70
  • ~25-minute DiDi northwest of the city
  • A historic hill with an ancient leaning pagoda on top — more active walking and scenery, less garden-focused.
  • Plan 1.5 hours.

Option C (if you still have energy): Lion Forest Garden (狮子林)

  • Opening hours: 07:30–17:00
  • Ticket: ¥40
  • Walking distance from Humble Administrator's Garden — you could actually combine it in the morning if you're a garden enthusiast.
  • Smaller, famous for a labyrinthine rockery in the central pond.
  • Plan 45–60 minutes.

How to pick: gardens → Lingering or Lion Forest; outdoor views and a bit of hiking → Tiger Hill.

Return to Shanghai

  • Back to Suzhou Station by DiDi (~20 minutes)
  • Frequent G-trains run back to Shanghai through the evening; check your return ticket and leave buffer for station security and the short walk to your platform.
  • Arrive Shanghai in time for dinner in the city.

If you overnight in Suzhou

One extra day unlocks:

  • Zhouzhuang or Tongli — historic water towns, 1 hour by DiDi or bus
  • Master of Nets Garden (网师园) — smaller and more intimate than the big-name gardens, famous for night tours
  • Shantang Street (山塘街) — another canal-side street, touristy like Pingjiang but with a different vibe; fine for an evening walk

Common mistakes

  • Trying to visit 3+ gardens in one day — you'll stop appreciating them. Two big ones plus Pingjiang Road is the upper limit.
  • Skipping Pingjiang Road — this is the most atmospheric part of the city.
  • Arriving at the wrong Suzhou station — check your ticket before you leave Shanghai; Suzhou has several stations, and the old-town ones are much more convenient than the newer suburban ones.
  • Leaving too late — return trains fill up in the evenings; don't leave your ticket-buying until the last hour.
